Mail has a celtic origin and it was adopted by the romans in the II century b.C.
Mail has a celtic origin and it was adopted by the romans in the II century b.C. This model has a shoulder reinforcement, as the greek linothorax, and is sleeveless. From the last year of the first century A.D. the mail evolves to the model with sleeves and without shoulder doublet, that lasts until the end of the middle age.
Made from round, 1.6 mm thick spring steel rings with an internal diameter of just 8 mm this fabric offers much more strength and protection than the regular butted mild steel chain mail. The netting is 4 in 1, the typical European weave. We call this maille type BTW (Butted Tensile Wire). Due to it's excellent value for a fair price, BTW-maille is perfect for beginning re-enactors looking for good protection and solid quality. The natural finish allow rust but provides an authentic look.
